Moto Valor Gear Guide

Layer Up for Winter Riding

A practical cold-weather layering guide for staying warm, dry and protected without making your riding gear feel bulky.

Cold air, wind and moisture can change how a ride feels within minutes. A good winter setup uses several efficient layers, each with a clear purpose, so you can adjust as the temperature and road conditions change.

01

Start With a Dry Base

Your first layer should move moisture away from the skin. Choose a fitted merino wool or quick-drying synthetic layer that stays smooth beneath your riding gear.

  • Avoid moisture-holding cotton
  • Use a close, comfortable fit
  • Add base-layer bottoms for longer rides
  • Choose warm technical socks

02

Add Warmth Without the Bulk

A lightweight middle layer traps warm air while preserving movement. Fleece, wool and low-bulk synthetic insulation work well beneath a properly fitted riding jacket.

  • Keep shoulders and elbows mobile
  • Avoid bulky hoods
  • Choose packable insulation
  • Use one efficient layer first

03

Keep Protection in Position

Your jacket, armored flannel or protective shirt still needs to fit correctly over the layers beneath it. Armor should remain stable over the shoulders, elbows and back.

  • Reach naturally for the handlebars
  • Check every armor pocket
  • Watch for tight sleeves and shoulders
  • Remove bulk if protection shifts

04

Stop Wind and Rain

Your outer riding layer should reduce airflow while providing abrasion and impact protection. If the jacket is not waterproof, keep a compact rain shell within easy reach.

  • Close the collar and cuffs
  • Use removable weather liners
  • Carry packable rain protection
  • Seal the jacket at the waist

Seal the Exposed Areas

Cold air commonly enters around the neck, wrists, waist and ankles. Covering those openings can improve comfort without adding another heavy layer.

  • Tuck in a warm neck gaiter
  • Match glove cuffs to jacket sleeves
  • Wear warm socks without crowding boots
  • Cover the ankles and lower legs

Test, Ride and Adjust

Sit on the motorcycle before leaving and check your reach, armor placement and control feel. During the ride, open a vent or remove a layer before perspiration builds.

  • Test the full riding position
  • Check glove and boot control
  • Keep one layer accessible
  • Adjust before you overheat
